Political opposition to mourning for Imam Hussein in Bahrain

According to “Khabar 33,” Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior, headed by Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa—one of the key executors of security projects in the country—has, in line with its annual practice ahead of the month of Muharram, summoned the heads of religious centers (takayas and Husseiniyas) and issued new directives.
During the meeting, Rashid bin Abdullah explicitly criticized the doctrine of “Wilayat al-Faqih,” stating that any attempt to politicize Ashura مراسم will be dealt with firmly, with no tolerance.
Analysts believe that conditions for Bahrain’s Shia community will be significantly more difficult this year compared to previous years. The government is reportedly intensifying its campaign against Shia identity, seeking full control over mourning content, including poetry, speeches, and even flags.
The Al Khalifa regime is said to aim at removing the spirit of resistance and opposition to injustice from Ashura rituals, turning them into practices devoid of political and social meaning. This approach comes as Bahraini Shias consider Ashura mourning an essential part of their identity and dignity.
It is anticipated that this year’s Muharram in Bahrain will see increased restrictions, tighter security monitoring, and action against religious symbols. However, past decades have shown that greater repression often leads to stronger public adherence to Hussaini rituals.
