Statement by His Eminence, Grand Ayatollah al-Modarresi, regarding the ongoing events in Syria.

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to God, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings be upon Muhammad and his pure, virtuous family.
During the blessed month of Ramadan—the season of Divine Mercy, when mercy overwhelms hearts and the bonds of affection are strengthened—Muslims everywhere have been shocked by the staggering news regarding the unfolding events in Syria. This raises profound questions concerning the trajectory of this ancient land: Is the region witnessing yet another civilizational setback in Syria?
Will Syria remain an independent, unified state—one that exerts influence upon regional affairs? Or, due to the conspiracies of global Zionism, the abandonment by many Arab nations, and the shortsightedness of certain key actors involved in the Syrian crisis, are we destined to witness this steadfast nation cast into the eye of storms and sedition? Will this come to pass through the instigation of internal strife and the recurrence of massacres—much like those that occurred in other parts of the world, such as Rwanda? Furthermore, will it occur through the exploitation of Syrian soil by international terrorists—who fabricate crises only to subsequently perpetrate massacres—such as the atrocities witnessed along the Syrian coast, which claimed the lives of thousands of women, children, and innocent men?
We earnestly appeal to the Muslim peoples, to the sincere and wise leaders of the region’s nations, and to the prudent figures within Syria’s new administration: you must strive diligently to halt the collapse of this steadfast Arab-Muslim nation.
The officials currently holding responsibility in Syria face a formidable and historic trial. It is incumbent upon them—just as it is upon the nations of the region—to exert every effort to preserve what remains of this cherished land. This is essential to ensure that global Zionism, the enemies of the Muslim Ummah, and terrorist factions cannot exploit the current circumstances to deliver the final blow—tearing the country apart and shattering its very foundations.
And God is the Source of Aid.
