This belief, known in Shiite literature as “the presentation of deeds,” has a solid Quranic and hadith-based foundation and has been affirmed by scholars of both schools.

According to Quranic verses, including verse 105 of Surah al-Tawbah: “Say: Act, and Allah will see your deeds, and His Messenger and the believers,” God, the Prophet, and a group of believers – who in Shiite traditions are interpreted as the infallible Imams (a) – observe the deeds of servants. This verse, together with verse 94 of the same surah, constitutes the main Quranic basis for the presentation of deeds.

Shiite scholars such as al-Shahid al-Awwal in “Dhikra al-Shia,” Allama Tabarsi in “Majma al-Bayan,” and Sayyid Hashim Bahrani in “Yanabi al-Ma’ajiz,” citing verses and traditions, have affirmed the presentation of deeds to the Prophet and the Imams. On the other hand, Sunni traditionists and exegetes, citing authentic hadiths, have also spoken of the presentation of the community’s deeds to the Prophet after his passing.

Among the most important Sunni traditions is a hadith narrated by Ahmad ibn Hanbal in his Musnad from Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, in which the Prophet (s) said: “My life is good for you: you speak, and we speak to you; and my death is good for you: your deeds are presented to me, and whatever I see of good, I praise God for it, and whatever I see of evil, I seek God’s forgiveness for you.” According to this tradition, both the life and death of the Prophet are beneficial to the community, for their deeds are presented to him after his passing as well, and he gives thanks for good deeds and seeks forgiveness for evil ones.

There are also traditions in Sunni sources according to which the deeds of the living are presented to their deceased relatives. Ahmad ibn Hanbal in his Musnad narrated from Anas ibn Malik that the Prophet (s) said: “Your deeds are presented to your relatives and kin among the dead: if it is good, they rejoice in it, and if it is otherwise, they say: ‘O God, do not cause them to die until You guide them as You guided us.'”

Sunni scholars such as Ibn al-Hajj al-Maliki in “al-Madkhal” and Abu Sa’id Khadimi in “Buriqa Mahmudiyya” have affirmed this belief and considered it certain. Abd al-Qahir al-Baghdadi, a Shafi’i jurist, also stated that the Messenger of God (s) is alive after his passing, rejoices in the obedience of his community, and grieves over their sins. Suyuti and Salihi Shami also confirmed this.

Experts’ View:

Experts in theology and hadith studies consider this issue significant in terms of the mass transmission of traditions and the consensus of scholars of both schools. Dr. Mohammad-Hossein Rajabi, senior researcher at the Hadith Studies Center in Qom, said: “The traditions on the presentation of deeds exceed the level of widespread transmission and have the force of semantic mass transmission. What takes this belief beyond an exclusively Shiite doctrine is the existence of authentic hadiths in the most authoritative Sunni musnads confirming the presentation of deeds to the Prophet after his passing. This overlap between the sources of the two schools indicates the deep-rootedness of this belief in Islamic tradition.”

On the other hand, some researchers have pointed to interpretive differences between the two schools. Dr. Abdolkarim Soroush, a researcher in Islamic studies at Leiden University, said: “Although the principle of the presentation of deeds is accepted in both schools, the referent of ‘the believers’ in verse 105 of Surah al-Tawbah is interpreted by Shiites as the infallible Imams, while Sunni exegetes understand it more broadly to include all righteous believers. This interpretive difference is considered one of the points of theological divergence between the two schools.”

Analytical Conclusion:

Revisiting Shiite and Sunni textual sources shows that the presentation of deeds to the Noble Prophet (s) and the divine witnesses is a belief rooted in Quranic verses and authentic hadiths of both schools. What takes this belief beyond an exclusive claim is the existence of authentic traditions in authoritative Sunni sources that not only confirm the presentation of deeds to the Prophet after his passing but also speak of the presentation of the deeds of the living to their deceased relatives.

The key point is that the timing of the presentation of deeds – daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly – is expressed differently in various traditions, but as Shiite scholars have emphasized, these traditions do not contradict one another, and all of them speak of the continuity of the Prophet’s and the divine saints’ oversight of the community’s deeds. From this perspective, the interworldly life of the Prophet (s) is not merely symbolic but a real and effective life in which he is aware of the community’s condition, gives thanks for its good deeds, and seeks forgiveness for its evil ones.

The author believes that this belief has important educational and moral implications for Muslims. Awareness that one’s deeds are presented not only before God but also to the Prophet and the divine saints can create a strong incentive for piety and vigilance in behavior. As Imam Sadiq (a) said in a tradition: “What is wrong with you that you sadden and grieve the Prophet (s)? Do you not know that your deeds are presented to him, and when he sees a sin in them, he grieves?” This tradition clearly shows that the presentation of deeds is not an abstract concept but a living and effective reality in the spiritual life of Muslims.

A comparative study of Shiite mass transmissions and authentic hadiths from Sunni musnads shows that the interworldly life of the Noble Prophet (s) continues, and the deeds of the community…

[4

post-492","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-culture-and-art
["GET
